About

Mari Howells is a visual artist and teacher based in New York. Her interdisciplinary practice engages with conversations between materials, genres, and historical periods and evokes a wide variety of categories from theater, literature, music, and modernist art. Her performance background is echoed in the theatricality of much of her work, which foregrounds her interest in thinking about spectatorship, space, and installation. She received a Master of Fine Art in photography from the Royal College of Art, London; a Master of Fine Art in theater from Columbia University; and a Bachelor of Art in theater and music history/composition from Lancaster University, UK. She is an adjunct professor at Hofstra University, NY, and at Pratt Institute, NY, where she teaches photography.
